United Airlines' Massive 787 Order - Overkill or Just Smart?

So I just read that United Airlines placed a huge order for 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. That's a pretty bold move! I think they're aiming to refresh their wide-body fleet and maybe replace some older 767s and 777s. But I'm wondering if this is a bit too much, or if it's just what they need to stay competitive on long-haul routes.

I know the 787 is super fuel-efficient and all, and it seems like a good fit for international routes, especially with all the noise about carbon emissions and sustainability. But with everything going on in the world, I'm curious if they're biting off more than they can chew.

Anyone got thoughts on whether this is a strategic move or a gamble? And how do you think it'll affect their route network? I'm no expert, but it feels like a big commitment!
Going big with the 787s makes sense if they're planning to phase out those older 767s and 777s. The fuel efficiency and lower emissions are huge pluses, especially with the pressure on airlines to go greener. But yeah, 100 planes is massive. I wonder if they're also betting on a post-pandemic travel boom? If demand doesn't pick up as they expect, they might have to get creative with deployment. Remember when they kept using the 747s way past their prime? Could be a similar situation if things don't pan out.
Feels like a smart move to me. Those older 767s and 777s probably cost a fortune to operate compared to the 787s. With the push for greener aviation, this could position United well for the future. But yeah, 100 planes is a lot. Makes me wonder how they'll manage all those deliveries. Maybe they're banking on international travel bouncing back strong. Or maybe they got a sweet deal from Boeing? Who knows, but it's a bold bet for sure.
It's a big move, for sure. But I think it's more strategic than risky. The 787 is perfect for United's long-haul routes, and with their older 767s and 777s getting up there in age, it's probably time for a refresh. Plus, with fuel costs and emissions being such a big deal now, the 787s could save them money in the long run. I wonder how quickly they'll phase out the older planes, though. Could be a game-changer for their international network.
