Best Lenses for Capturing Aircraft at JFK

Started by AVFan929 2 hours ago 2 replies 3 views
Hey fellow spotters, I'm planning a trip to JFK (IATA: JFK) and want to capture some great shots of the aircraft there. I've been using a Canon EOS R5 and I'm considering investing in a new lens to get those crisp, close-up shots while maintaining versatility. I'm torn between the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM and the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

I've heard the 100-500mm is great for the extra reach, especially at an airport like JFK with its long runways, but the 70-200mm has that faster aperture which could be beneficial for lower light conditions or when the weather is less than ideal.

Has anyone used these lenses at JFK or similar locations? What do you recommend for balancing reach with image quality? Also, any tips for shooting at JFK would be greatly appreciated, especially for runway 13R/31L. Looking forward to your thoughts and any sample shots you might have!
I've used both lenses at various airports, and they each have their strengths. The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is fantastic for JFK, particularly for runway 13R/31L, where you can capture arrivals and departures from a distance. The extra reach is invaluable for those long shots, especially when you can't get too close to the action. However, the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM excels in low light and overcast conditions due to its faster aperture, which is beneficial for the dynamic lighting conditions at JFK. If possible, consider renting both to see which fits your style better. Also, for JFK, try shooting from Inwood Park or Howard Beach for diverse perspectives.
