Hey fellow aviation photographers! I'm in the market for a new telephoto lens and I'm looking for recommendations specifically for aviation photography. I've been using a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 with my Canon R5, but I'm finding it a bit short for capturing aircraft at larger airports like LAX (LAX) and JFK (JFK). I'm considering the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L or the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sport. Has anyone used these lenses for plane spotting? How do they perform in terms of sharpness, autofocus speed, and handling heat haze? Also, are there any issues shooting through glass at observation decks or from further distances? The Canon RF 100-500mm is incredibly sharp and pairs perfectly with your Canon R5 for quick autofocus, but it might struggle a bit in low light due to its variable aperture. The Sigma 150-600mm offers extra reach, which is great for larger airports like LAX and JFK, but it's a bit heavier, so handling can be more challenging during long sessions.
Both lenses manage heat haze well, but remember that atmospheric conditions play a big role, so shooting earlier in the day or in cooler weather can help. Shooting through glass can affect image quality regardless of the lens, but using a polarizing filter can sometimes reduce reflections.
