Best Lenses for Capturing Aircraft at JFK: 70-200mm vs 100-400mm

Hey fellow spotters! I've been photographing at JFK (JFK) for a while now, and I'm looking to up my game. I currently use a Canon EOS R6, and I've been primarily working with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens. While it's been great for capturing aircraft on the taxiways and runway approaches, I sometimes find myself wanting a bit more reach, especially for planes on the distant runways or in the air.

I'm considering adding the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM to my kit. For those who've used both lenses, how do they compare in terms of sharpness and clarity at longer distances? Is the extra reach of the 100-400mm worth the trade-off in aperture size, especially during overcast days when light is limited?

Also, if anyone has advice on the best spotting locations around JFK where these lenses shine, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Looking forward to the community's insights!
I've used both lenses at JFK, and each has its strengths. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L is fantastic for low-light conditions due to its larger aperture, which is beneficial during overcast days. However, for more distant aircraft, the Canon RF 100-400mm definitely provides that extra reach you're looking for. While the 100-400mm has a smaller aperture, the image stabilization compensates well, and the R6's high ISO performance helps mitigate low-light issues.

For spotting locations, try Inwood Park for great views of arrivals on runway 31R or the Costco parking lot for 22L approaches. Each lens works well, but the 100-400mm will give you more versatility, especially for those further away shots.
