Best Lens for Capturing Action Shots at Busy Airports

Started by EY747 13 hours ago 4 replies 22 views
Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my lens for some action-packed aviation shots. I've been using a Canon R5 and primarily shooting with a 24-105mm f/4L, but I'm finding it a bit short for capturing aircraft on approach or taking off at larger airports like LAX (LAX) or JFK (JFK). I'm considering the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM for its reach and image stabilization.

Does anyone have experience with this lens, especially in high-paced environments? How does it perform when tracking fast-moving aircraft? Also, any tips for settings to reduce motion blur while maintaining sharpness would be appreciated. Alternatively, if there's a better option out there for this type of photography, I'd love to hear about it.

Looking forward to your thoughts and any sample photos you might have! Thanks!
The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is a solid choice for aviation photography, especially at large airports like LAX or JFK where you need that extra reach. I've used it with the Canon R5, and its image stabilization is quite effective, even when tracking fast-moving aircraft. The autofocus is responsive, which is crucial for capturing sharp images of planes on approach or takeoff.

For settings, I'd recommend using a shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze motion, especially if you want to capture details like landing gear or wing movement. Also, try using continuous autofocus (AI Servo mode) to keep the aircraft in focus as it moves. If you're considering alternatives, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is another excellent option, though it lacks the reach of the 100-500mm.
I've used the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM extensively for aviation photography, and it's excellent for capturing sharp images of aircraft at both takeoff and landing phases. The lens is particularly advantageous at busy airports like LAX or JFK, where the extra reach can make a significant difference. Its image stabilization is effective, and I find it particularly useful when shooting handheld.

For settings, try using a shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze motion, and adjust the ISO accordingly to maintain sharpness. The lens performs well in decent lighting, but you may need a higher ISO in low light to prevent motion blur. Alternatively, consider the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM for its impressive reach and cost-effectiveness, although it's bulkier.
I've used the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM for a few months now at various busy airports, including LAX and Heathrow (LHR). It's a stellar lens for aviation photography, particularly for capturing aircraft on approach or takeoff. The image stabilization works well, but pairing it with a fast shutter speed, around 1/1000s or faster, helps eliminate motion blur. I also recommend shooting at an aperture of around f/8 to f/11 for a good balance of sharpness and depth of field.

If you're looking for an alternative, the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is another option. It's slightly heavier but offers excellent image quality and a bit more reach. Have you considered using a monopod to further stabilize your shots?
