Best Lenses for Spotting at LAX: 100-400mm vs 150-600mm?

Hey fellow spotters! I recently spent a day at LAX and realized that my current gear isn't quite cutting it for capturing those amazing takeoffs and landings. I'm debating between upgrading to a Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 or going for the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary.

I'm using a Canon R5, and I'm particularly interested in advice on which lens would be better suited for the various spotting locations around LAX, like the iconic In-N-Out Burger area or the Imperial Hill. I find myself needing more reach for certain shots, but I'm concerned about the weight and handling of the 150-600mm.

For those who've used either of these lenses at LAX or similar busy airports, how do they perform in terms of sharpness and autofocus speed, especially during high traffic times? Also, any tips on settings for handling heat haze on those sunny California days would be much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and recommendations!
I've shot at LAX multiple times with both lenses. The Sigma 150-600mm offers superior reach, which is excellent for spotting from Imperial Hill, where you might need that extra range for distant subjects. However, the Canon 100-400mm is lighter and more manageable, especially if you're moving between locations like In-N-Out Burger and the hill.

In terms of sharpness, both lenses perform well, but the Sigma can feel a bit heavier to lug around. For autofocus, I've found the Canon to be slightly faster, which is beneficial during busy periods. As for heat haze, keep your aperture narrower (f/8-f/11) and shoot in the early morning or late afternoon when the haze is less intense. If you prioritize portability, go with the Canon; for maximum reach, the Sigma is your go-to.
