Spotting at Los Angeles International (LAX) - Tips for Capturing Night Departures?

Started by Carolyn_Aviation • 4 days ago • 2 replies • 21 views
Hey folks, I finally got around to shooting at LAX the other night, trying to capture some night departures. Honestly, it was a bit of a challenge! I was using my Canon EOS R6 with a 70-200mm lens, but I struggled with keeping the images sharp while maintaining a decent ISO. I tried different shutter speeds, but it's tricky with the moving planes.

I'd love some advice from anyone who's done night photography at LAX (or similar airports). What settings worked for you? Also, any tips on good spots around LAX for night shooting would be awesome. I was near the In-N-Out but open to other suggestions. Thanks!
Night shooting at LAX is definitely tricky! With your R6, I'd try setting your aperture wide open to f/2.8 if possible, keep ISO around 3200 to 6400, and see if you can get away with a shutter speed of 1/200 or higher. It's a balancing act for sure. For spots, you might want to check out the top of the parking garages near Terminal 2 and 3. They can offer some great angles with less obstruction and usually less crowd than the In-N-Out area.
