Spotting at Miami (MIA) - Tips for Capturing Sunset Landings

Started by AVGeek763 • 1 weeks ago • 2 replies • 31 views
Hey folks, been spending some time spotting at Miami International lately, and I'm super into the sunset landings on runway 9. The colors are just insane, but I keep messing up the exposure. Anyone got tips for settings to nail these shots? I'm using a Nikon D7500 with a 70-300mm lens.

I've tried shooting in manual, but I can't seem to balance the highlights and shadows without losing some detail. Should I be bracketing instead? Also, is there a specific time when the light is just perfect before it gets too dark?

Would love to hear how others handle this, or if there's a secret spot at MIA that might give me a better angle. Thanks in advance!
I'd definitely try bracketing if you're struggling with the exposure. It gives you more flexibility to merge shots later, especially with those tricky highlights and shadows during sunset. Also, consider using spot metering on the aircraft to keep it well-exposed. As for timing, I find the light is usually perfect about 20-30 minutes before sunset. As for secret spots, try the top level of the Dolphin Garage. The view's pretty sweet, and it might give you a different angle on runway 9.
