So, Lufthansa flight LH470 from Frankfurt to Toronto had to make an unexpected stop at Manchester. They were flying a Boeing 747-400, tail number D-ABVY, when they declared an emergency over the UK. They used the 7700 transponder code, which is never what you want to see. Anyway, they landed safely at Manchester at about 15:57 local time on the 26th of September. Emergency services were ready and waiting when they touched down.
I always find it a bit nerve-wracking when you hear about these emergencies, but it's reassuring to know they landed safely. I wonder what caused the diversion? Mechanical issue, medical emergency, or something else? I guess we'll have to wait for more details.
Anyone have more insights into what might have happened? Also, how's Manchester for handling these kinds of diversions? I know it's a pretty busy airport, but I don't hear about it being a common diversion spot for transatlantic flights. Thoughts?
