Qantas Expanding in Auckland - What's the Strategy?

So I just read that Qantas is quietly building up a hub in Auckland instead of sticking to Sydney. Kinda interesting move for the Aussie flag carrier, right? They've got their main hub in Sydney and others in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth. Makes sense since those are big cities in Oz. But Auckland, that's a bit unexpected.

I guess it makes sense when you think about the strategic location. Auckland's closer to the U.S. and South America, so maybe that's part of the plan. Plus, it probably helps with all the trans-Tasman flights and connections to the Pacific islands.
