So, the KC-46 Pegasus, right? It's been over ten years since Boeing snagged the KC-X competition with this bird. It's done a lot already - flying all over Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific. Over 100 are in service with the USAF. But here's the kicker: it still can't refuel every aircraft in the fleet.
Take the A-10 Thunderbolt II for instance. It tried boom refueling with the KC-46, but the boom stiffness issue is a pain. Messes up reliable refueling, so they needed a redesign. And then there's the F-22 Raptor and B-2 Spirit Bomber. These guys have to be super careful when they refuel, or they risk scraping the radar-absorbent coating. Not ideal for two of the most stealthy planes out there.
Why do you think it's taking so long to fix these issues? I mean, you'd think refueling is a pretty basic thing for a tanker. Are there other aircraft that the KC-46 struggles with? And do you think we'll see these problems sorted out soon, or will they drag on for a while? Curious what you guys think!
