Planning a Trip to Japan - Which Card for Best Points Value?

Started by Jessica2002 3 weeks ago 5 replies 62 views
So I'm starting to plan a trip to Japan next year and trying to figure out the best credit card for maximizing points. I already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which I like for the 2x points on travel, but I'm wondering if I should look into the Amex Gold or even the Venture X for this trip.

My main goal is to rack up points for a comfy business class seat on the way there, maybe even try JAL or ANA if possible. I know some cards have better transfer partners for these airlines. Also, any tips on hotel programs for decent stays in Tokyo and Kyoto would be awesome.

Would love to hear what cards you guys are using for trips like this and any redemption strategies that worked out well. Thanks in advance!
I'd stick with Chase Sapphire Preferred if you're already comfy with it, but the Amex Gold is pretty solid for dining and groceries, which could help you stack points faster if you spend a lot there. For JAL or ANA, Amex points transfer to both, but check out their rewards programs to see which has better availability. For hotels, Hyatt's got some good options in Tokyo and Kyoto, and you can transfer Chase points to Hyatt. Have you looked into that?
I'd check out the Venture X. They've got great travel perks and their points transfer to a bunch of airlines, including JAL and ANA through partners like Asia Miles. For hotels, if you're into boutique stays, maybe look into the World of Hyatt program. They've got some nice properties in Tokyo and Kyoto, and Chase points transfer there too. Just make sure to book early, especially for cherry blossom season! Got caught once with no rooms during peak time. Not fun.
I'd say look into the Amex Gold if you're gonna spend a lot on dining while planning for the trip. The 4x points on restaurants can add up fast. Plus, Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to ANA, which could be handy if you're eyeing a business class seat. For hotels, Marriott Bonvoy is pretty decent in Japan, and they have a good range in Tokyo and Kyoto. Anyone tried using Hilton Honors for Japan stays? Curious how that stacks up.
The Amex Gold is pretty solid if you're gonna be dining a lot, but if you're looking at JAL or ANA, I'd say Venture X could be worth it for the airline partners. I've heard good things about the Hyatt program in Japan for hotels, especially in Tokyo. They often have nice properties and can be a good use of points. Also, keep an eye on any transfer bonus promos that pop up. They can really stretch your points!
