USAF's E-7 Wedgetail Dilemma - Smaller Planes Instead?

So, I was reading about how the USAF is thinking about ditching their $1.8 billion order for the E-7 Wedgetail. They're considering going for smaller aircraft instead. Seems like they're trying to move away from the old E-3 Sentry, which makes sense since that thing's been around since the late '70s. I mean, the 707 it's based on is even older, going back to the '50s!

The E-7 Wedgetail is built on a 737 platform, so it's a modern choice, but I guess the USAF is rethinking things. Maybe they're looking for something more flexible or cost-effective? Not sure what smaller aircraft they have in mind, though. Makes me wonder if they're considering something totally new or just downsizing.

Anyone know why they'd prefer smaller planes for the AEW&C role? Do you think going smaller is a good move, or should they stick with the Wedgetail? It's kinda fascinating to see how these decisions get made. Thoughts?
